Fund Raising

Although Sema Academy is supported by a few organizational sponsors, and a number of individuals, our vision includes full support for textbooks and tuition for all the students, not only the 60 supported (for three years only) as of this writing. This Academy will produce the next generation of leaders who will help lead Kenya into a stable, humane way of life in the coming years. Contributions to the Academy are tax deductible under the rules for charitable donations; the Kenya Fund is a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island.

Dear Friend of Sema Academy:

My name is Ryan Dobrin. I am 13 years old, in the eighth grade, and am the grandson of Arthur and Lyn Dobrin, the founders of the Kenya Project. I am a member of Amnesty International, as well as the Kenya Project. My life has been hugely affected by my grandparents. I have been hearing of Sema ever since I was small.

But right now I am writing on the behalf of the Kenya Project, to talk about Sema Academy. They need your help more than ever. The school has suffered since the murder of the founder and director, Japheth Maranga, and is now being run by his wife and children. But there is still much to be done.

The children of the school have suffered as well. Early last year, political violence ravaged through the streets of the town, leaving some of the children’s neighbors, friends, and family dead. The school was thankfully protected, but much is still needed to be done. The school is in need of many things, things that seem to be so naturally provided for us here are needed so desperately there. Things such as desk, pencils, pens, sanitary napkins, and malaria nets. Even the small ‘rope bags’ which weigh hardly anything and take up almost no room are gratefully accepted.

From a recent study, it is found that the average Kisii (the school’s town) worker earns $200 per year. The tuition for the school is $100! Imagine wanting to give your children a good education. It would be all your earnings that year! Sponsoring a child can help so much.

Thank you so much for helping us over the years with your support of Sema Academy.

Thank You,

Ryan Dobrin for the Kenya Project
